The two Chronicle pages
shown above prove speedway/grasstrack took place at Tilehurst in
1932. The event was part of the Emmer Green Church Fete held
in 1932 |
Les Hawkins says: That is Tilehurst Reading stadium. The
meeting was described elsewhere as racing on grass. The
photocopies are a bit chopped off I’m afraid.
|
John says: Thank you
Les, email me any "gems" you uncover. |

Memories |
|
Peter Lewis says: I was just
reminiscing about Anders Michenek of all people (?) when I
remembered I used to climb the trees at the back of Tilehurst
stadium to watch, the noise of the bikes was alarm enough to get
on down there, as a ten year old. I found your website.
Great memories, if you could get in at the end of a match you
could `storm` the track in the hope of an autograph , the riders
being mostly very friendly. I was amazed no one
burned to death with all the methanol spills in accidents!
The new stadium, like you say, had not the character and was two
bus rides away and that was that. |

Reading Tilehurst
1971 Or 1972? |
|
|
|
Reading Tilehurst Can anyone add any names?
John
|
|
Phil Masters says: Richard May, Dag Lovaas,
Mick Bell, Anders Michanek, Bernie Leigh, Geoff Curtis.
On bike Geoff Mudge, I think the chap also on the bike is team manager
Dick Bailey. The year could be either
1971 or 1972 as they used the same team both years.
John says:
Yes I agree. Dag, Anders and Geoff Curtis were Newcastle
assets in 1970. I believe Newcastle's Division 1 license was transferred to
Reading in 1971. |
|
John says: Yes Newcastle folded at
the end of 1970 and Newcastle's Division 1 license was transferred
to Reading along with the Diamonds number 1 Anders Michanek |

So sad to see the demise of a speedway
stadium. Modern stadiums lack the atmosphere of the old art
deco stadia |
