Andrew Gallon says: Hello John,I attach a few of my pics of
Derwent Park, Workington, which (as I'm sure you know) closed
to speedway at the end of the 2018 season. On and off, the
venue hosted speedway between 1970 and 2018, including
Glasgow/Workington Tigers' ill-fated truncated 'on the road'
season of 1987. The Comets speedway team's former landlord,
Workington Town Rugby League Club, has since removed the track
and extended and relaid its pitch, to east and west,
effectively precluding a return for speedway to Derwent Park.

Andrew Gallon has supplied all of the images in this section
and he goes on to say: On a personal note, I'll always
be grateful to Derwent Park for reviving my interest in
speedway. As a schoolboy, I'd watched Halifax at The Shay but
pretty much lost touch with the sport while away at
university. My first job was in west Cumbria. Six months after
I'd relocated there, homeless Glasgow, having been asked to
leave Craighead Park at the end of the 1986 season, announced
they'd be reopening Derwent Park to speedway from May 1987.
This bold 'on the road' exercise wasn't a great success.
Indeed, Glasgow were thrown out of the National League before
the end of the season after numerous complaints from visiting
clubs. Most gripes were about the track, which was dangerous
because Glasgow officials, based miles away, were unable to do
much work on it between meetings. One of the low points came
at the end of August when, on a baking hot Sunday afternoon,
Workington Tigers (as they'd renamed themselves) hosted
Middlesbrough Bears. A nearby farmer's bowser was hastily
acquired to water the dusty track before the first heat.
Unfortunately, the bowser hadn't been cleaned, so the track
found itself sprayed with a smelly mixture of water and
slurry. The poor riders in that opening heat finished the race
covered in the stuff! However, I really enjoyed what I saw at
Derwent Park that summer and thereafter became a regular
speedway follower.
