Andrew Gallon says: Speedway was staged at the purpose-built Loomer Road circuit between 1973 and 2019. The owners of the Chesterton track, which cost £200,000 to construct and was used by Chesterton Potters (1973 only), Stoke Potters, Stoke Spitfires and Cradley & Stoke (1996 only), sold the 16-acre site to a developer. The stadium, which had been up for sale for some time, has been demolished. Planners have given permission for industrial units to cover the site. The area around Loomer Road is already surrounded by similar structures. After a first visit in 1988, I went many times to Loomer Road. It might not have been the smartest stadium in speedway but the racing was usually very good and the viewing excellent from the grandstand terracing. Greyhound and stock car racing also took place at the stadium. An abiding memory of Loomer Road was a problem caused, at certain times of the season, by the setting sun. Low in the sky, it shone right into the riders’ eyes as they lined up on the starting grid. This led to mid-meeting delays of 15 minutes or so, to allow the sun to set and for safe visibility to be restored. I also recall the centre green announcer - a local radio presenter, George Andrews, I think - referring to the team as the “Podders”. I always think of Stoke as the “Podders”!
