Andrew Gallon says: Hello John, A
few Scunthorpe Saints items to get you started with a
Scunthorpe (Quibell Park) section: three programmes, from the
1971 (the first), 1975 and 1976 seasons. Each scan is labelled
clearly. John says: My thanks to Andrew for
supplying info on Quibell Park allowing me the opportunity to
start this Quibell Park page.
Andrew goes on to say: I lived in Scunthorpe between
2005 and 2008. Timing was perfect because my arrival coincided
with the 2005 relaunch of speedway in the town, at Normanby
Road, after a 20-year absence. On relocating from Leeds, I was
keen to check out the site of the first Scunthorpe Speedway
venue, Quibell Park. It hosted Scunthorpe Saints matches
between 1971 and 1978, initially open meetings (1971) then
fixtures in British League Division Two (1972-74) and the New
National League (1975-78).
I was very pleased to discover North Lincolnshire
Council-owned Quibell Park completely intact - and still in
use, for athletics and cycling events. It is a surprisingly
pleasant little stadium, fringed on two sides by the trees of
Brumby Wood. Quibell Park's small grandstand, on the south
side (formerly the home straight), remains in situ. Viewing of
the racing, from the elevated edges of the velodrome, must
have been excellent. The eight-lane athletics track, which now
has a tartan surface, was shared by the speedway club.
Disputes with the athletics club over alleged damage to the
track rumbled on for several years and eventually led to
Saints being asked to leave. Kind regards, Andrew
