Buxton Speedway |
(Raceway) |

Buxton Raceway, Dale Head Lane, Axe Edge, Near Buxton,
Derbyshire. The Hitmen operated between 1996 and 2006 and
odd occasions since. |

Andrew Gallon says: Owing to its
exposed location, up on High Edge, I only ever went to Buxton
Raceway when glorious weather was forecast. As a result, my
memories of this scenic track consist entirely of idyllic
spring and summer Sunday afternoons. The raceway, which didn’t
have any spectator cover (unless one took one’s car
trackside), operated between 1996 and 2018. A purpose-built
circuit, it replaced the rather inadequate, hard-to-ride track
at the adjacent stock car stadium, which had hosted Buxton
meetings in 1994 and 1995. My preferred spot at the raceway
was just to the right of the starting gate. From there, one
could look out across the track and, to the north, over an
impressive vista of lush Peak District countryside. The drive
to Buxton was always a treat. During the track’s lifetime, I
lived mostly in various Yorkshire locations. My picturesque
route usually took in the Holme Valley, Holme Moss,
Longdendale, Glossop, Chinley, Chapel-en-le-Frith and central
Buxton. Never had to touch a motorway! I often wondered
whether any locals supported the Hitmen. Most of the Buxton
crowd seemed to comprise speedway followers from Manchester,
Stoke, Sheffield, the East Midlands and West Yorkshire.
Members of the Moss family owned and ran Buxton Hitmen. Their
laudable policy throughout was to bring on and blood young
riders rather than track teams capable of winning matches and
trophies. It appears the Moss family is keeping the raceway in
use, for private practice sessions and instructor-led
experience days (@rideandskidit.com).
These are for flattrack and speedway (albeit 125cc bikes
only), which at least offers the potential for the return of
league racing.
