Barnsley Speedway |
|
(Lundwood) |
|
Lundwood, Pontefract Rd., Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
1928-1930 aka Lundwood Speedway or
Lundwood Dirt Track |
|
I am told this was a very basic track with an earth safety fence, no pits or
any other facilities. However, Barnsley staged the first league match in the
UK when Leeds were the opposition in 1929. The British army used the
site for training during the second world war.

Andy Green has sent these pictures. If this is the right
location it is incredible that the track still exists |
John says: very unlikely that the pictures show this old
track. I would have expected trees etc growing over it and
who knows what covering the old track, after this length of time. I would like to think
this was the old location of the track (and maybe it is!) but it
looks like only the local off roaders have churned up this field! |
Andy says: Hello John I’m pretty sure I
took those pictures at the right location as my dad was from
the local area and told me where it was. I think I took them
in the late 80’s early 90’s. The track was being used by local
youths to race around on old motorbikes and police were often
called. Looking on google earth today it seems that although
it is only a grassed area all traces have gone suggesting that
it has been ploughed up and made into a flat field to stop any
further motorcycling taking place. Regards Andy |
John says: OK Andy, you may have located the old place.
We need a forensic team to visit the site Ha Ha!

Martin Green has been in touch he
supplies the following aerial shot of where the track was: - |

Martin says: Hi John,
I'm not so sure that the Barnsley Lundwood pics are of
the correct location. The last time I'm went to visit
this site I don't remember it being as open looking
over the town but obscured by trees. I've attached an
aerial pic of the exact location where the blue marker
is, this info I got from a 1930's map of Lundwood so I
know is absolutely right. Maybe Andy could compare
with his location. |

Rob McCaffery says: Hi John, this was
definitely the first-ever speedway league match, staged 6th
April 1929. The Leeds match was on May 20th. The
Greyhound Derby website quotes the Leeds match but Speedway
Researcher clearly shows this is wrong. |

Les Drury has obtained this image of The Times
which although of too low resolution to read the text in the
article we can see adverts for Sheffield, Barnsley and Wombwell.
Yorkshire speedway featured on it's own page in 1930. |
