Workington born Rol Stobbart (once a Newcastle Rider) started Ayr with his
brother Maurice, also rode for Newcastle Diamonds. Unfortunately the centre did not survive beyond the
opening season 1937. Jim Henry says: Ayr only staged 2 meetings, so we can
assume it isn't a centre about to reopen its doors in 2010 or anytime
soon. |

Speedway Machines
During The 1930s |
|
|
|
There was once a number of bikes from
different manufacturers in use in the speedway world. AJS,
Harley Davidson, Douglas and Rudge and a number of others were
common sights on our tracks from 1928 to the middle of the 1930s.
Then along came the JAP (John Alfred
Prestwick) from about 1931. The JAPS, (made in Tottenham,
London), wiped the floor with the earlier machines and by 1937
when Ayr dabbled with speedway I can say that all riders would
have been mounted on mighty JAPs. |
