Aldershot Speedway

(Boxall's Lane)

Aldershot has had 2 homes. Aldershot sports stadium Boxall's Lane and Aldershot Stadium Tongham. This page concerns itself with the earlier track ie Aldershot Sports Stadium, Boxall's Lane Aldershot, Hampshire.  Boxall's Lane operated all to briefly in 1929 and again in 1931.  The stadium was redeveloped and used as a reservoir and then housing.

Graham Collyer says:  Hello John, I have just come across your Defunct Speedway Tracks website and it brought back memories as my late father and I were regulars at Aldershot speedway at the Oxenden Road track throughout the 1950s. I notice on your Aldershot (Tongham) page, you say you have no record of the earlier location in Boxall’s Lane, and I wonder if a reference I have found in my Dad’s diaries might offer a clue. On July 3 1929 he wrote: ‘To Aldershot dirt track opening meeting.’ As he did not expand I have no knowledge of whether this was the first of the season, or the first ever (the latter, perhaps, in view of the date). May I suggest the files of the Aldershot News, the Farnham Herald and the now defunct Surrey and Hants News, the three local papers that would have covered the speedway, would be worth researching.  Best wishes, Graham

John says: Thank you Graham, your comments about your father's diary have made my mind up to create a page for the earlier Aldershot, Boxall's Lane venue.  Perhaps someone will come onto this page and be able to supply a photo, programme or newspaper items from 1929 or 1931.  If anyone can help, send me an email please John

Good morning John, was chatting to my brother about the old speedway in Aldershot back in the 1960's and i mentioned to him about a track somewhere along Boxall's Lane in Aldershot before the stadium in Tongham.
So this morning i started a search, having checked your excellent site first to see if there was any mention of this track. Sure enough you had mentioned it but unfortunately not much information apart from a letter from Graham Collyer. You asked if anyone had more information to get in touch so here i am with what i found. , not much but a map to show where the old track  was built.
I am a local lad brought up in Aldershot, i support the local football club and in my younger days i used to visit Reading Speedway at the Smallmead Stadium as this was the closest track and also Wimbledon at Plough Lane. Visited a few tracks in the south, Exeter, Weymouth, Poole, Swindon, Eastbourne, Oxford, Canterbury, Hackney and went to see Cradley Heath on a saturday evening.. Saw 2 World finals at Wembley and some others at White City. Also been to Cardiff to see a couple of GP meetings and popped into Newport to see a meeting too.
Sorry to see the state of speedway in this country now, unfortunately the younger generation are just not interested in watching the sport. i must try to get around a few more tracks before they go..
i have lots of speedway programmes including a few from Aldershot. Aim to try to get one from every meeting of the Aldershot club which may prove  TOUGH CHALLENGE.
find enclosed map of the site of the Aldershot track
all the best, keep up the great work on the site. Regards Chris

Bikes like the Douglas DT, shown above, would have been the popular choice of the riders, during the venue's short life.
